Laing House Masquerade Ball

What's Happening?

Laing House is excited to be working in the Sackville/Bedford/Fall River area. Partnering withthe IWK Health Centre, Nova Scotia Health Authority, and HRM Recreation, Laing House in Sackville operates out of a multi-service youth centre known as The Den.

Since opening in November 2018,The Den has grown into a drop-in space for youth 13-24. Youth can access mental health peer support, free counselling services, arts-based programming, and youth-led activities.  All free of charge.

Laing House in Sackville provides a safe and inclusive space for youth where a culture of peer-to-peer support is fostered.  Developing peer to peer support can then extend beyond The Den into their high schools and other community spaces, which in turn support positive mental health and positive relationships amongst youth and adults.

Together with our partners, IWK and NSHA, Laing House offers a program FriendZone – a youth-led initiative where young people develop and maintain positive mental health. Youth have opportunities to work on their confidence in a group setting, to support each other in a healthy way, and to make friends. FriendZone runs every other Monday, 6-8pm at The Den and is open to youth ages 15-19.

Laing House is launching Peer Support Training in the summer of 2019. Peer Support Training will give youth the education, tools, and resources to be able to support their friends with mental health challenges. The training will allow youth to pull from their own experiences navigating mental health challenges and build skills in the areas of communication, boundary setting, self-care and more. Peer Support Training will also promote positive mental health and helps equip youth so they can best support their peers’ mental health recovery journeys.

Laing House Sackville is looking to partner with community organizations, youth health centres, and Sackville youth to provide services in other locations throughout the area. Transportation and access may be a challenge so Laing House wants to come to you whenever possible!
